COMPARISON OF SOIL CONTAMINATION AT THE SELECTED EUROPEAN COPPER MINES

چکیده

This article reports the results of a study concerning contamination dump-fields by potentially toxic elements at five abandoned copper mines: ?ubietová, Špania Dolina (Slovakia), Libiola, Caporciano (Italy) and São Domingos (Portugal). paper offers an updated description soil individual deposits indicates possible solution derived environmental problems. Contamination technosoils PTEs shows irregular spatial distribution Fe, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Sb Pb. Contents often exceed both national EU law limits. Whereas risk is limited, Libiola it seems to be very heavy. The technosoil (slag) not well aerated colloids have (except for Dolina) negative surface charge, so they are suitable sorption. main in mining area Sao district long time formation acid mine drainage water high As Pb contents. release components may limited phytostabilization immobilization metals, admixtures into technosoil/slag. situation compromised as area. Phytostabilization will able stop erosion, installation wetlands under dump Cu environment.

Toxicity of copper to the collembolan Folsomia fimetaria in relation to the age of soil contamination.

The toxicity of copper to the collembolan Folsomia fimetaria L. was studied in soil incubated with copper sulfate for different periods before the introduction of collembolans, to assess the effect of aging of contamination on the toxicity of copper. Adult survival, reproduction, and juvenile size were assessed. No clear influence of differences in contamination age was detected. The data were ...

Multivariate statistical analysis of urban soil contamination by heavy metals at selected industrial locations in the Greater Toronto area, Canada

A good understanding of urban soils metal contamination and locating their pollution sources due to industrialization and urbanization is important for addressing environmental problems. Urban soil samples near industrial locations in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Ontario, Canada were analyzed for metal (Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb) contamination. Multivariate geo-statistical analysis (cor...

Formation of metallic copper nanoparticles at the soil-root interface.

Copper is an essential element in the cellular electron-transport chain, but as a free ion it can catalyze production of damaging radicals. Thus, all life forms attempt to prevent copper toxicity. Plants diminish excess copper in two structural regions: rare hyperaccumulators bind cationic copper to organic ligands in subaerial tissues, whereas widespread metal-tolerant plants segregate copper ...
